Melbourne is Victoria’s capital city and the business, administrative, cultural and recreational hub of the state.

It boasts some of the largest sporting events and facilities in Australia and the world, and prides itself on its amazing food culture and nightlife.

The entire Greater Melbourne area spans over 9990 km2 and is home to 4.9 million people. Home to people from more than 200 countries, Melbourne is known as Australia’s most culturally diverse city.

Made up of 31 local government areas, Metropolitan Melbourne occupies much of the coastline of Port Phillip bay and spreads into the hinterland towards the Dandenong and Macedon Ranges, Mornington Peninsula and Yarra Valley.

Liveability

Melbourne consistently ranked as the world's most livable city for much of the 2010s. Melbourne enjoys a temperate climate with warm to hot summers, mild and sometimes balmy springs and autumns, and cool winters. However, the weather can be changeable, so be prepared for anything.

The median house price is $941,000 and approximately $480 per week for a rental property.  Melbourne has a highly diversified economy with particular strengths in finance, manufacturing, research, IT, education, logistics, transportation and tourism. Melbourne houses the headquarters of many of Australia's largest corporations.

Melbourne is often referred to as Australia's garden city, and the state of Victoria was once known as the garden state. There is an abundance of parks and gardens in Melbourne, many close to the CBD with a variety of common and rare plant species amid landscaped vistas, pedestrian pathways and tree-lined avenues. Melbourne's parks are often considered the best public parks in all of Australia's major cities.

In addition to its extensive train and bus network, Melbourne has the largest urban tram network in the world. It also has Australia's most extensive freeway network.
